MIND GAMES: In the game on Saturday, December 16, at home at Fryth Way, Nailsea & Tickenham FC against Ilfracombe Town ended in a 3-3 draw. Joint manager Nic Steadman said: "An entertaining fame, we deserved three points but some of the strangest decisions I've ever seen. Thanks to everyone who donated to Mind in Somerset."
Top of the table Clevedon Town welcomed their largest crowd since April 2009 for the first North Somerset league Classico, and in a typically tight well contested derby game the enthusiastic home support roared the Seasiders home for a hard earned victory.
After a watchful start the first chance of the game came on 9 minutes when Syd Camper’s powerful shot was deflected, and former Town keeper Jason Mellor pushed the ball over for a corner which led to Freddie King’s shot being cleared.
Nailsea went up field and home keeper James Dunn was quickly out to foil another former Seasider Lucas Vowles. Joe Teall twice set up shots for King which were cleared and then a direct run by Alex Camm into the box took him past 3 defenders before a great recovery tackle by Andy Head put the ball out for a corner.
Nailsea went close on 22 minutes when a lapse in the Clevedon defence saw Vowles land his chip on the top of the net.
As the game ebbed and flowed Elliot Nicholson was felled by Hamish Hurst when he burst forward but King’s free-kick hit Teall and was cleared. Camm’s cross was cleared for a corner by Dan Cook as Sam Beresford was about to pounce and Syd Camper’s cross following a short corner was headed just wide by Glen Hayer just after the half hour.
Then when another Camm cross for Beresford was intercepted, Nailsea broke up field with Head picking out Lloyd Mills and Camper headed the ball out for a throw in. The long throw fell nicely for Dan Cook whose shot flashed across the goal and just wide, with Sol Kent on hand to stop the next attack, first heading clear and then reacting quickly to block the follow up.
Another Town short corner saw Mellor save from Teall’s header and then King’s shot from 20 yards from Teall’s through ball just missed the target. Clevedon finally made it count on 41 minutes when a great defence splitting Camper pass saw Beresford’s deft touch guide the ball past Mellor.
But the lead only lasted 3 minutes when typical of the game, Nailsea went up the other end and equalised when Oliver Carter’s cross from the right was headed home at the far post, so at half-time it was honours even at 1-1.
There was an explosive start to the second half in a decisive 3 minutes which was to prove Nailsea’s undoing. First Mills picked up a yellow card after tangling with Camm near halfway, then on 51 minutes Clevedon regained the lead when Beresford controlled a ball into the box on his chest to volley home for 2-1. Two minutes later the disaster was complete for Nailsea when Mills was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on the halfway line, and they found themselves a goal down and a man down.
Both teams reorganised, Nailsea bringing on Miles Hardidge for Harry Pruett and Clevedon swapping Harlee Vozza for Camm, and straightaway Vozza was in action bobbling a shot just wide. But Nailsea worked hard to minimise the numbers disadvantage and tried to pick something up on the break, and they almost succeeded on 70 minutes when Dunn pushed away a Hardidge shot low down and Hayer was on hand to complete the clearance.
Town then went close on 78 minutes when the referee played a good advantage and a quick exchange of passes between Beresford and Vozza ended when Mellor saved Beresford’s final shot. Vozza then combined with Nicholson down the right, but Hurst cleared the cross. Clevedon made one last throw of the dice when Owen Punselie replaced Beresford and almost immediately it paid dividends. A typical Vozza run down the right saw his shot from a narrow angle blocked, but Punselie was in the right place to smash the ball in from close range and put Clevedon 3-1 up.
It almost became four deep into added time when Cam Salmon’s cross saw Punselie’s header and Vozza’s follow-up both blocked before the referee brought proceedings to a halt for a final score of Clevedon Town 3 Nailsea & Tickenham 1 which extended Town’s lead at the top to 4 points.

A successful North Somerset football club has announced plans it is to establish an under 18 squad.
Nailsea & Tickenham FC, whose home ground is at Fryth Way, Nailsea, has made an official application to compete in the Western Counties U18 Floodlight League Northern Division, with the club now on the lookout for talented young footballers who want to take their game to the next level and the chance to play for the senior Western League Premier Division team.
The new squad will be headed up by ex-professional football player Jason Eaton and Simon Tarr, both of whom live locally and have been involved in youth football for many years.
Both now see the setup of this new squad as the perfect opportunity to give aspiring young players a means of progressing to adult football and possibly beyond.
The pair will be planning a series of trials in early 2024 with pre-season training starting in the late spring.
Jason said: “Having played for both Bristol clubs and Cheltenham professionally I totally understand how important it is to have a feeder teams that allow young players to compete and develop their skill.
“To be given the chance to start off a new squad from scratch is a fantastic opportunity for both myself and Simon and now will give local talented young footballers the platform to develop and continue the journey for those who still want to play at the highest level.”
Top u18s coaches
Simon said: “We’re really looking forward to this, bringing together a brand-new squad.
"We’re totally inclusive and want to hear from those who might be interested.”

“I’m delighted that we have found two top quality coaches in Jason Eaton and Simon Tarr.
"They bring with them a great pedigree and lots of experience in the game and we are confident in making this a success.
“This is the first time in the towns history that a Football club in Nailsea has been able to host floodlight games at this level and it will give the young players a great platform to make their next natural step into senior football and the opportunity to play in the Western Football league in their home town.”

Ilminster Town can count themselves unfortunate as Nailsea equalised in the 12th minute of added time to grab a point that on the balance of play they did deserve, although where the referee found the extra 13 minutes in total of added time was a mystery to the Ilminster dugout, writes Andrew Fish.
Nailsea out for revenge after a 5-1 defeat at Ilminster only two weeks ago, were quick out of the blocks and dominated the first period of the match as the Blues failed to get any meaningful possession, with a strong cross field wind it was difficult to get the ball down and play.
A free kick won on the edge of the area gave Jack Steer a chance to show his dead ball prowess, he did not disappoint as he found the bottom corner to give his side a 1-0 lead, some what against the run of play.
The goal gave the side confidence as suddenly it seemed a different game now, the team got hold of the ball and Steer this time turned provider as he beat a couple of players before playing in Taylor Jefferson who controlled the ball well before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
Nailsea came on strong to get back in the match during the closing stages of the half, Ilminster just about kept them out to take it to half time.
Going downhill in the second half Nailsea enjoyed most of the ball, they had a couple of half chances.
It was the home side with a long ball forward and with the Blues defence failing to clear their lines that scored the all important third goal with 15 minutes left to play.
It was the home side with a long ball forward and with the Blues defence
Nailsea United away draw in extra time
failing to clear their lines that scored the all important third goal with 15 minutes left to play.
Ilminster then defended deep and with the 90 minutes up it looked like the job was done ,the referee let play run on and on, then in the 12th minute of added time Nailsea scored after a cross had hit the crossbar and in a packed penalty box the ball was knocked in from close range.
To be fair to Nailsea they certainly did not deserve to lose, although they can count themselves lucky that the referee added on the additional time.

A Backwell bowling club has new shirts thanks to a local estate agent.
West Backwell Bowling Club has debuted its new kit at a special event at Windsor Castle, thanks to sponsorship from Parker’s Estate Agents and Letting Agents.
The club has historically played in whites, as is traditional in the sport, but as part of it’s new Thrive With Bowls campaign, making the sport more fun and accessible to everyone, it was decided to update the shirts to a vibrant green and yellow.
The club was recently invited to play in the grounds of Windsor Castle versus The Royal Household, where the new shirts were worn and the team won their match.
Parker’s, which has its headquarters at newly-refurbished offices in Backwell, is both principal sponsor and shirt sponsor of the club.
West Backwell Bowls Club chairwoman Grace Higgins said: “We absolutely love our new and unique shirts and we’re delighted to have debuted them at this special game.
“The shirts really represent us as a club – we’re fun, forward looking and engaging and they fit perfectly with our Thrive With Bowls campaign which is all about promoting health and wellbeing, improving the lives of our members and increasing community engagement.
“Bowls truly is a sport for all and we want to support people in being more active.
"We have seen first-hand the difference bowls has made to our new members this year.
"We’ve had whole families playing together, and many say their physical activity has been increased by 100 per cent.
" It has also helped with recovery from a stroke and by providing a social environment for widowers and people who were previously housebound.
“The invitation to play within the Windsor Castle grounds has been delayed since our 90th anniversary during Covid but came at the perfect time to show off our new shirts.
"Many clubs are now moving towards colourful shirts or at least a flash of colour on their kits and I think it’s a great reflection of what an inclusive and fun sport bowls is.
“Thank you to Parker’s for their continued support.”
The shirt’s design also features the club logo, a stag, which is a take on the Robinson Family crest.
Theodore Robinson donated the recreation park grounds to the people of the village of Backwell.
The bowling green was opened in 1929 by the Marquis of Bath who bowled the first bowl. Mr Robinson was made President of the bowling club and remained so until his death in 1959.
The words on the logo are Audi alteram partem - which means hear the other side.
Parker’s Estate Agents director Andrew Simmonds said: “We’re thrilled to be shirt sponsors for this wonderful local team.
"The new shirts look really eye-catching and we’re looking forward to seeing the Parker’s logo in all its glory when we watch the next match.
“Supporting local community projects and clubs like this is really important to us at Parker’s.
"West Backwell Bowls Club is a vital resource for the people of our village and surrounding villages to become more active and to engage in social activities and we’re pleased to be able to back them.”
West Backwell Bowls is a village club run solely by volunteers. With more than 120 visitors per week, the volunteers run regular events for their members and the community including a weekly ‘Tuesday Try’ bowls night and an engaging social programme at the clubhouse kitchen and bar.
The club also has a new Novices section with subsidised membership for all beginners to include all the support, coaching and aids required.

“Anyone can take part and we’d love to see parents, teachers, our own members plus members of the public pop their name down and have a have a go.They can go as fast or slow as they wish and can book as many 30-minute slots as they like!
“We’re also hoping that anyone who visits during the day will pop any spare change into collection buckets adding to the overall total.”

Final score Brixham AFC 2 N&TFC 3
Another away trip for Nailsea & Tickenham FC this time to Brixham AFC and the Swags team didn’t disappoint.
After going 1-0 down with some tidy build up play on the right for Joe Berry to send a cross to the back stick for Lucas Vowles who made no mistake with his header.
Just before half time Vowles nearly doubled his tally for the afternoon only to be ruled out for handball leaving everyone confused.
But the referee decided it before blowing the half time whistle.
In the second half Brixham came out of the blocks a lot quicker and it was their number 11, the best player on the pitch, who snuck one into the corner.
From kick-off Sways had a huge chance to take the lead but chances were missed and Brixham went up the other end and put another in the back of the net.
2-1 down in the space of a crazy 45 seconds.
Jacob O'Donnell then whips a deep free kick into the box with the keeper trying to claim but the wind played its part and the keeper dropped it to Sam Thomas.
He was the quickest to react and smashed the ball into the net – his first goal for Swags.
Then with approximately 10-15 minutes to go O’Donnell leapt like a salmon from a Lucas Vowles cross to power head into the corner and grab the three points for thw Swags.
A great on the road victory and a deserved three points.

Midfield player Jared Ford was named man of the match for a fantastic box to box performance.
Brislington got back into the game in the second half to bring the scoreline level at 2-2 but with 10 minutes to go a header from Nick Buxton was enough to secure the win and put the club in the next round of the cup.
The Swags goals came from Lucas Vowles, Callum Dunn and Nick Buxton.
The verdict was ‘solid win and thoroughly deserved by the boys’.

Nailsea is known to have nurtured a prolific number of sporting and stage stars.
Shining among these is Sam Bell, son of Micky Bell the former England footballer legend and Bristol City defender.
Son Sam signed a new three-year contract with his father’s former club this week.
And Sam, who is Bristol City's top scorer so far this season, returned to Nailsea for a photoshoot on the playing fields of Golden Valley Primary School and Nailsea School at Nailsea Park where he began his schoolboy sports career.
Sam has paid tribute to Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson after signing a new contract declaring he’s living every ‘local kid's dream’.
Fifteen months after he signed his last deal, the 21-year-old has extended his agreement by a further 12 months, as he’s begun the 2023-24 campaign as a key player for the Robins with four goals in nine Championship games.
Sam was awarded his senior debut in December 2020 under Dean Holden, and after an unsuccessful loan spell at Grimsby Town he’s increasingly become a part of the first-team squad.
He’s made 51 appearances for the club having emerged through the Robins academy where he was prolific at U18 and U21 level.
Raised in Nailsea, Sam is among of clutch of talent who have graduated from the youth set-up at the club and earned consistent first-team

opportunities under Pearson and has made significant strides already this season.
Looking back Sam joined Clevedon Town on loan in April 2019, where he scored three goals in four matches and Yate Town on loan in December 2019.
In December 2020, Sam made his professional debut with Bristol City in a 1–0 Championship loss to Birmingham City.
And in November 2021, he signed for Grimsby Town on a short-term loan, linking him up with Robins team mate Ryley Towler.
He began to break into the Bristol City first team in December 2022, and scored his first Bristol City goal in the 2022-23 FA Cup third round replay against Swansea City, scoring an extra time winner.
He followed this up with a brace against West Bromwich Albion in the 4th round.
Micky represented Bristol City from 1997 to 2005.
He was appointed as a coach with Bristol City in October 2021.

SWAGS DEFEAT: Nailsea & Tickeham FC lost away from home against Larkhall Athletic FC, on Tuesday night, October 4. The Southern League division one south player Max Evans was the only goal scorer in a game that ended1-0 for the Bath-based team. Swags gallant run in Somerset FA Premier cup is over
FLOODLIGHT FIXTURES: Bridgwater United FC announced on X that both of its league fixtures with Nailsea & Tickenham and been moved forward a day to the Friday night. The are home against the Swags on Friday, October 13 with a 7:45pm ko and away to Fryth Way on Friday, November 24, with a 7:30pm ko
Nailsea and Tickenham FC are back to their winning ways with a 4-3 result at home to Buckland Athletic FC with goals from man of the match Callum Dunn and Joe Berry.
With 20 munites on the clock and 0-2 down and keeper Jason Mellor in the sin bin the Swags thought it was going to be a difficult and long and afternoon as the visitors were in full control playing some fantastic stuff.
However, on the stroke of half time Callum Dunn pulled one back with some good build up play by Lucas Vowles.
As the second half started the Swags flew out of the blocka and with a lovely ball lofted from behind the back four Joe Berry was on hand to slot it into the bottom corner.
Minutes later Joe Berry got his send and out three as he gambled on a Jason Mellor long ball.
Within five minute Swags addeda nother and it was Callum who ran onto a well flicked pass from Vowles to go one one one and slot past the keeper.
We should have put the game to bed and missed a few golden opportunites with Buckland getting a man sent off and three points getting close.
But Buckland didn't give up and pulled another one back to make it 4-3 but it was the Swags in those last 10 minutes who should have added to the tally but it didn't happen.
Next game is Friday evening away to Bridgwater.
Goals galore with neat win for Swags
CAncelled WATERloGGED pitch
Bridgwater United 7-2 Nailsea and Tickenham
The original date for Nailsea & Tickenham FC to play Bridgwater United away game was postponed as their pitch was waterlogged and a new date of Tuesday evening, October 17, was set.
It wasn't a happy occasion as the Swags were defeated 7-2 in the Toolstation Western League clash.
This is an abridged version of the match report by Mark Hollidge posted online.
He said: "The almost untouchable Jay Murray danced in from the left side of the area and shot low to the keeper’s left. He couldn’t hold on and Taylor was ideally placed to score from 10 yards. 1-0
"Had the referee been more favourable to United they would have been awarded two penalties.
"George King was obviously pushed in the back when trying to greet a Taylor cross.
"The ball quickly reached Jack Thorne and his instant shot brought the best save of the night from Mellors. Playing advantage?
"Joe Berry and Lucas Vowles comprised a useful attacking spearhead for the visitors and they were involved in the surprising equaliser.
"Berry found some space on the right side of the penalty area and , although his low cross-shot wasn’t struck too cleanly, it was well aimed for the bottom left corner. 1-1
"United responded to this minor setback like an elephant swatting away a fly with its trunk.
"Within 15 minutes they had established a three goal lead. Taylor received a ball from King , cut inside two defenders and shot at goal from 15 yards with his left foot. The ball took a slight deflection off a defender and Mellors was left stranded. 2-1
"A Murray shot was pushed aside and in trying to retrieve the ball Mellors seemed to have pulled Taylor to the ground. Nothing given.
"Jack Thorne beat Mellors to a lofted ball.
"After his shot was blocked the ball landed at the feet of Harry Horton.
"He could have shot but he was unselfish and astute in laying on a better opportunity to Taylor.
"He was able to measure a careful low left footed shot which went inside the right hand post. 3-1
"The last of this trio of goals was possibly the best. Jack Thorne dinked the ball over the defence, King laid it square to Horton.
"From the edge of the area he drilled a low shot into the right corner of the net. Perfect. 4-1,"
At half time the score was United 4 Nailsea and Tickenham 1
Mark picked up the play as the game continued: "United were momentarily discomforted when the visitors were awarded a penalty.
"Vowles had the ball at his feet, but not in a dangerous position, when he was adjudged to have been fouled. If that was a penalty then United should have had two. He sent his spot kick down the middle as Jake Viney dived to the right. 4-2
PHOTO: Jack Taylor scored four in the win © Craig Blake
"The visitors were encouraged by this unrepresentative scoreline, kept attacking, and left even more gaps at the back – just waiting for them to be exploited.
"In a moment of outrageous skill Jack Thorne dumbfounded two defenders with his quick turn and his 40 yard curling cross had just enough on it to clear the left back and land perfectly at Murray’s feet. His rasping shot hit the bar but stayed out.
"For the fifth goal Dave Thorne did most of the heavy lifting.
"Through dogged persistence he won the ball near the right corner flag and crossed to the near post. Jack Thorne had seen it coming and he nipped in and , from an acute angle, directed his shot into the net off the crossbar. 5-2
"Very quickly it became six. Again Jack Thorne burst through. His shot was half saved and the loose ball gave Taylor the chance of a straightforward finish for his 4th goal. 6-2
"Dave Pearse emptied the substitutes bench , so everyone had a run out, and it was one of these substitutes who ended the scoring.
"A long ball was directed down the right. Adam Wright hared after it but Mellors, with a head start, was favourite to deal with it. Under pressure from Wright, Mellors missed the ball and Wright precisely rolled the ball into the net from 25 yards and wide out on the right. 7-2
"This scoreline will send shockwaves across the division.
"United are playing with supreme confidence, skill and interplay that verges on the telepathic.
"Watching them play like this is the top ticket in the town. It is a shame we can’t watch them every day!"

2024-25 season
The postponed match against Welton Rovers FC went ahead this week.
Previously the Nailsea & Tickenham first team game was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.
But the evening game under floodlights did go ahead on Tuesday, February 20, with the Swags notching up a convincing win 3-0 at home.
The Swags gained all three points with a well-deserved win in the Toolstation Western league premier division V Welton.
The Swags made four changes from the previous game, with Jason Mellor, James Seeley, Oscar Collins & Jared Ford all back in the starting line-up.
The Swags started brightly but were almost undone as a Welton cross dipped onto Jason Mellors crossbar and over.
Soon after, the lively Lucas Vowles struck the Welton post after goalkeeper Alfie Hamblin was beaten from just inside the area.
The Swags began to take control while their scrappy periods in the first half, the Swags had great chances to take the lead with Pruett, Osgood & Vowles all going close. Osgood had the ball in the net after a knock down from Steve Kingdon, but the linesman saved Welton with the offside flag.
The Swags onslaught continued and they came close from several corners and long throws which Welton just managed to clear. The first goal came on 41minutes with Luke Osgood taking a quick throw after spotting a Jared Ford run into the box. Ford turned and calmly slotted underneath Hamblin to make it 1-0.
Oscar Collins had a glorious chance to score after Oliver Carter burst down the right and crossed, but Collins headed over from close range. Half Time ended at 1-0.
The second half was one of N&Ts best performances of the season so far, Kingdon, Hurst & Pearce looking in control at the back and preventing any rare Welton attacks, ensuring they did not register a single shot on target during the second half.
Ford scored his second of the game to made it 2-0 after tapping in from close range as a Hamish Hurst deep cross was dropped.
Seeley, Pruett and Ford won the midfield battle allowing Collins & Carter space out wide to attack relentlessly, on another day the Swags would have scored several goals.
Hamblin made some good saves from Vowles whilst Carter fired over, and Hurst saw his header saved on the line.
The Swags had another goal disallowed after a Pruett corner was headed in, but the ref spotted a foul on goalkeeper Hamblin.
Home win for Swags
LAUNCHED WITH LAUGHER (and a few ums and puns): A new football pundits podcast launched this month with three players from Maidstone United FC club talking about Our Magical FA Cup Run. Brits Sol Wanjau-Smith and Sam Bone are joined by US player Conor Kelly. Former Nailsea School student Sol mentions his mum (and dad and sister) and one of the first teams he played at Nailsea United. Sam confessed he couldn't drive and Conor laid back on the sofa with his injured foot and lamented about his broken laptop. Hopefully all three will be fit to play in the 5th round against Coventry on Monday, February 26. Tickets are sold out but a lucky gang of Nailsea supporters are booked to travel. Listen more here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ8Xo1apBu0.
STOP PRESS: Episode 2, pictured, is out now and tells the story of Sam Bone. You can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=23_Es5n0C_s&feature=youtu.be
Osgood did make it 3-0 after 66 minutes by tapping in as the ball bounced off the post to secure his thirteenth league goal of the season.
There were still further chances with the Swags totally dominating possession, substitute Joe Cattermole, making his debut, smashed the cross bar from just inside the box. Vowles then came very close after Carter delivered another cross from the right-hand side.
Oscar Collins shot from outside the area but saw his effort curl just wide.
The game ended 3-0 and with a fully deserved three points for the Swags.
Squad - Mellor, Kingdon, Hurst, Pearce, Seeley, Pruett, Carter, Collins, Ford, Osgood, Vowles. Subs - Last, Cattermole, Bishop, Pilgrim, Manning.
Like many matches nationwide waterlogged pitches have been causing havoc with the fixture list.
Earlier in the day a Swags spokesman said : "The pitch is currently playable so unless we get severe rainfall we are very hopeful it will go ahead."
It was a great three points at home with goals from Jared Ford (two) and Luke Osgood. the man of the match accolade went to Ollie Carter.
Hours after the game ended the heavens opened!

TEAM SPIRIT: Football is so gladiatorial and the fine voices in 26,000-strong crowd at the Coventry ground chanted and sang their appreciation to a gallant effort for underdogs Maidstone United. This was the 5th round FA cup tie played on Monday, February 26. Sadly Nailsea United and Nailsea School former junior player Sol Wanjau-Smith wasn't allowed to play at the 11th hour for the Kent team as the hairline fracture in ankle still not fully healed. It was a good honourable match. And Sol thanks all his Nailsea fans for their unwavering support. Sadly another Nailsea School contemporary and good mate the up-and-coming Bristol City star striker Sam Bell is injured and is out of action for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old has played 33 games for the Robins this campaign, scoring five goals. He went off after 26 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 defeat by QPR. Robins manager Liam Manning said: "He's picked up a really bad hamstring injury, he's going to be out for the rest of the season unfortunately and he's going to require surgery," Nailsea-born Bell has been part of the club since the age of 12 and has been a regular starter this season, mostly as an attacking winger

This is game for the young that you can play for years.
These three bowlers are rolling up to celebrate the amazing total of 152 years they have amassed for Nailsea Bowls Club.
Club president Richard Jefferies stepped on to the green for the first time in his younger days 55 years ago, Roger Chappell has played for 51 years and David Flower 46.
But while their loyalty is being etched into the club’s history, they have no intention of retiring and are looking forward eagerly to the new summer season.
Richard said: "I was fascinated when work started to build the town’s Mizzymead Recreation Centre and to discover the site included a bowling green.
*‘I inquired how to join the club and as a founder member, paid my half-a-crown annual subscription and was elected on to the committee.
"There was no coaching in those days, so I had to work out for myself how to come to terms with the bias on the wooden bowls.
"As I gained experience, I began competing and spent a large part of my career enjoying individual and team competitions throughout the South West.
"I was also proud to introduce my son Julian to the game and he went to great heights to represent England at international level."
Roger took up bowls after turning his back on cricket after his one and only game ended in bitter disappointment.
He said: "I didn’t get the chance to bat or ball an over and when I was fielding, I never touched the ball, so I considered it a waste of time.
"My father encouraged me to take up bowls and after a half-century of thoroughly enjoying myself, I feel I made the right decision.
"One of the highlights came last summer when I captained the club’s B team that finished champions of the Somerset County League’s Division Three North.
"The group was made up of experienced players and newcomers who blended in perfectly to claim the title 32-points ahead of our nearest rival and with three games to spare."David’s memories include travelling on team tours to compete in ten countries spread across the world from Canada to Australia and New Zealand.

He said: "It was a marvellous experience. I’ve played in different levels of the game and afterwards I always enjoy a pint with my team-mates and opposition.
"As a docker at Royal Portbury and Avonmouth it meant I’ve had to organise many matches on free days around my shifts that was not always easy.
"Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed the game and the camaraderie that runs alongside it.’

FALMOUTH TOWN 1-0 NAILSEA & TICKENHAM
Falmouth Town just managed to get over the line in this difficult home tie against Nailsea & Tickenham, with a repeat of the result of their previous encounter in September.
Falmouth Town started the game with the majority of the possession but had to adapt their normal style of play due to the change in shape, having to play predominantly through the central areas, where their opponents had some experienced players.
Particularly the centre-back Steve Kingdon and captain Hamish Hurst who adopted a physical approach with some uncompromising tackles that other referees may have deemed fouls.
The first 20 minutes followed this pattern although The SWAGs had some promising moments going forward with the No:10 Miles Hardidge particularly catching the eye.
On 23 minutes, Falmouth made the breakthrough. During a period of Falmouth pressure, the ball was played down the left edge of the box to Rubin Wilson. He held it up and laid it back to Bradley Leivers who delivered an excellent first time cross to Jared Sims on the far post who nodded it into the bottom right-hand corner for his seventh goal of the season, past the accomplished Jason Mellor, the Nailsea & Tickenham goalkeeper.
In the 37th minute came the away team’s best chance of the match. The ball was worked out to the left wing and an early cross found Oscar Collins between the posts about 5 yards out. With the goal at his mercy, he blasted it over the bar, much to the F-Troop’s relief down at the Packet End.
One minute later at it was Town’s turn to spurn a chance. Jack Webber, who had a solid game in the centre of midfield broke through creating a one-on-one with Mellor but the big keeper got down well to save The Swags.
The half finished at 1-0 to Falmouth Town.
Although there were no changes of personnel at half-time, Falmouth seemed to set up more as a 4-4-2 for the second half, with Barner and Sims trying to provide the width. Within three minutes this change nearly brought it’s rewards. A good move down the right resulted in Barner squaring the ball across the box for Oscar Massey, but he was unable to get a clean touch on it and it was safely gathered by Mellor.
After a further 3 minutes, Coxhead made a good save from a Nailsea &Tickenham forward as the visitors started to apply pressure to the Town defence. With the wind against them, Falmouth were struggling to get out of their half.
However, Nailsea &Tickenham were lacking the final ball and all too often played it too long and the ball was blown to safety over the bye-line.
Swags lose away to Falmouth
The half continued with a flurry of corners having to be defended by Town.
On one occasion, a clearance fell to a Nailsea &Tickenham midfielder who struck a sweet half-volley just past Coxhead’s left-hand post.
As the game wore on, Falmouth had to defend more and more as they fought for the precious three points, but they were equal to the task and after around seven minutes of stoppage time, the referee finally blew up for full time, much to the relief of the impressive crowd of 455.

AT HOME: A draw on Good Friday at Fryth Way with each team gaining one point each. Great performance, great game and great turnout from Swags players and supporters especially as its No3 acted as an emergency replacement for goalkeeper in first half
HOME WIN: Great game at Fryth Way with goals from Luke Osgood and Oscar Collins and special mention to new signing Jakob Glover as goalkeeper for an outstanding debut with Harry Pruett getting the man of the man accolade
GAME ON: Ashton and Backwell United home game against Peasedown finished 5-2, great win for Stags who play at Backwell playing fields, West Town Road. The next home game is on Saturday, April 20, against Middlezoy
MISSED CHANCES: Game of two halves, Nailsea & Tickenham goalkeeper made some brilliant saves in first half to keep the score 0-0. In the second half it was all one-way traffic. The Welton Rovers FC 'keeper produced the performance of the season. Swags had eight to nine clear chances to put the ball in the back of the net but it wasn’t their night. Man of the match Joe Bishop
Chard travelled to Nailsea who are in the middle of the table on Saturday, April 13, and the pre-match prediction was it would be a draw.
Chard started well creating chances but again their leading goal scorer Jordon Clapp was missing and Tim Legg was still injured.
So once again players were having to play out of position. Joe Chamberlain was back but still not to his best.
After seven minutes of great play from James Boyland found Joe Chamberlain in space, his shot was saved but Liam Cleal was quick to put it into the back of the net. Straight from the restart Nailsea attacked and hit the bar.
All afternoon Jason Contreras was struggling to find the Chard players, because of the gusty wind.
On 32 minutes a stray clearance found a Nailsea attacker who pounced on the ball and struck a sweet shot for the equaliser.
Three minutes later a free kick was crossed into the box, Jason Contreras came out to catch it and again the swirling wind took it over his head into the goal. 2-1 at half time was harsh.
The second half started and a reshuffle to get back into the game didn't work for Chard.
As Chard was pushing forward Nailsea got their third after 67 minutes and killed the game.
Will Board came on for Joe Chamberlain but Chard couldn't get another goal.
In the dying minutes Nailsea got their fourth of the afternoon, it was a maximus win for Nailsea as it shot them up the table.

A ‘proud son’ is to run the world-famous London Marathon for Children’s Hospice South West – after being inspired by the work his mum does for the charity.
Tobias Maltman, aged 27, is to join thousands of other runners as they pound the streets of the capital on Sunday, April 21.
Chartered surveyor Tobias started running during the Covid pandemic and his 26-mile challenge around London will be his first ever marathon.
He was inspired to run for CHSW as his mum Julie works as a nurse at its Charlton Farm Hospice in Wraxall.
“I have dropped mum off at work on occasions and have also visited the hospice,” said Tobias.
“I am inspired, amazed and so proud of the work she does.
“Raising money running the marathon will give me an opportunity to show my support for not only for all the children in the hospice’s care but also my mum, who despite the demands of the job and the emotional toll it can take, is still able to deliver excellent care to the children, young people and their families.
“The support and care offered to each child at Charlton Farm is bespoke to their needs and helps to make the most challenging moment in anyone’s life a little easier to bear.
“The opportunity to raise money to support the work of Charlton Farm will make a difference to the children, their families and the nurses that care for them - making the most of short and precious lives".
Tobias, who grew up in the Wye Valley and now lives in London, has been busy getting into training for his challenge.
On a recent work trip to America, one of his training runs took in the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco.
“I’ve been given a training programme which I have been following and going out on training runs,” said Tobias.
“Living in London, I have also managed to run parts of the route of the marathon in preparation for the big day.
“My dad also ran the London Marathon many years ago and used to speak about it.
“Ever since it’s been something on my bucket list to do.”
Tobias has set up a JustGiving page with a target of £2,500 and has already raised £2,000 for CHSW.
Son is putting on his running shoes
“My mum and all the staff at Charlton Farm do an incredible job every day,” said Tobias.
“Running the London Marathon for CHSW is a fantastic way of achieving a personal goal while raising money for an incredible charity.”
Children’s Hospice South West has been providing care and support to children with life limiting illnesses and their families in the South West for over 30 years.
The charity offers specialist palliative and hospice care for the whole family, a sibling support for brothers and sisters, emergency support, end of life care and a bereavement service.

GO GIRL: Nailsea Running Club member Jules Richardson was surprised and thrilled to get a placed to run the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21. She said: "Many of you may know me from working with the Nailsea Community Group but I'm also a keen runner. On Sunday I will be running the London Marathon in aid of Alzheimer's Society. I enter the ballot for the London Marathon every year but never get a place. I knew that if I did get a place I would want to fundraise for Alzheimer's Society - I've even applied for a charity place but haven't been successful. This terrible disease is affecting more and more people that I know and love and I'm trying to do my bit and raise as much as possible, so if you'd like to help me I'd be really grateful." In 2023 approximately 48,000 athletes finished the 43rd mass participation event, beating the previous record set in 2019. The marathon distance is officially 42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi) long run mainly over flat course. To give go to https://www.justgiving.com/page/julia-richardson-1706902709345

Start of 2024 Nailsea cricket season
Grove Sports Centre and Social Club
After a poor result Saturday Nailsea United firsts came back with a bang against Fry’s Club FC.
The first 45 mins was all one way traffic with Michael Vaughan bagging himself a hat trick.
It was a very complete first half performance and Nailsea went in at half time with a simple message, don’t conceded!
And 45 seconds into the second half the boys conceded, the old cliche of 'keep it tight' was in full flow here.
The next 15 mins proved tough watching as the team threw away a 3-0 lead to find themselves level.
However shortly after the equaliser the boys found a fourth to put them back ahead.
The drama wasn’t quite over in defence as Frys found a header cannon back off the post into the GK hands.
With a change of shape and personnel the boys then decided to stretch their legs again with Elliot Moore getting himself a hat trick and Dylan Williams grabbed a late goal.
A Nailsea United spokesperson said: "We couldn’t pick one man of the match this week so both hat trick heroes Mike Vaughan and Elliot Moore take the award this week.
"Both worked tirelessly upfront and showed some real class in their composure and finishing in the game."

We are u7s footie champions
A Nailsea team of seven-year-olds came back from a football tour as champions.
And the youngsters got to collected their winning cup by premier football manager Harry Redknapp and former English international footballer.
Nailsea Junior FC annual end-of-season tour was in Bournemouth in 2024 with R+T Tours.
Nearly 300 young people in teams from u7s to u13s took part.
A NJFC spokesman said: "We chose Bournemouth for this years tour as it also included a girls football tournament which we entered a combination of our u12/13s girls team into a 11-a-side competition.
"It was an amazing weekend creating special memories for all the children attending and this is exactly what we are all about.
"Incredibly our u7s and u8s teams won the gold cup for sportsmanship.
"his is incredibly important as it’s important to the club that our young people understand that enjoyment, fun and playing the game in good spirits is far more important than results.
"Our u7s also won the overall winners for their age group which was an amazing achievement.
"Our u9s team got to the final and ended up losing a close final 2-1 but what an achievement coming runners up in a strong age group.
"We entered teams at u10s,u11s and u13s girls and all of these teams did themselves and the club proud."
"On the Saturday night it was fancy dress night.
"This years theme was something beginning with a B for Bournemouth - it is fair to say families were very creative with lots of bananas!
"A great long weekend staying in Rockley Park Haven, playing football at the outstanding facilities of the University of Bournemouth."
In all 276 people went which included all the players.
The girls team wore new blue and navy tour T-shirts thanks to sponsorship from:
-
Joe Brake at Somerset Pest Solutions & Brakes Cider;
-
Failand Inn Pub and
-
John Browns Hardware store
And all the children got to meet Harry and Sue and all collected medal mementoes.

Nailsea Bowls Club hope throwing open their doors once again for Bowls' Big Weekend can help continue their growing membership numbers.
The Somerset club will be running an open day on Sunday, May 26, with bowls taster sessions on offer for those looking to give the sport a try.
It is a method that is tried and tested, with the club seeing an influx of new players post-Covid after numbers began to dwindle to worrying levels before the pandemic.
Chairman Duncan Edier said: "We have six rinks so can get everyone playing, it’s a lot of fun on the day, and if people are interested in doing more we run taster and coaching sessions for three more weeks afterwards.
“We will have 30 volunteers showing people what to do and it’s a fun day.
“We have been running the weekend since the first one in 2021, we do quite a lot of social media advertising and in previous years we have had about 40 people turning up to try it out.
“About 50 per cent of our current membership has been recruited from the Bowls Big Weekend, so we have seen a tremendous impact.
“The membership reduced in number prior to lockdown and if we kept going on that route, the club would not have survived.
"Bowls' Big Weekend has been a major part of our growth which has been very successful.”
Bowls Big Weekend, which runs from Friday to Monday, May 24-27, will see bowls clubs up and down the country put on open days and free sessions in a bid to get more people playing the highly accessible sport.
Nailsea Ladies captain Janet Hobson is proof of the impact the weekend can have, after first picking up a bowl at the club’s event three years ago.
She said: "I would always encourage anybody to have a go.
“I joined three years ago, I had never bowled before.
“My husband and I were new to the area, didn’t know anybody else at all, and we thought this was something we fancied a go at and haven’t looked back.
Bank holiday bowls at Mizzymead
“There’s something for everybody, regardless of age, ability, gender. It’s a very sociable sport.“When I first joined, the ladies club was really beginning to struggle for numbers but those numbers have gone up by almost double and we are putting great teams out every week.”To find your nearest participating club and sign up for a free session go to bowlsbigweekend.com.

Nailsea & Tickenham v Chippenham Town big cup draw.
It’s only Nailsea’s second season in the competition, and they’ve landed a plum draw against a side three divisions above them.
Having beaten Cinderford Town, Reading City and Hartpury University, they won’t roll over against a Chippenham side who lost 4-1 at this stage last year to lower league Hungerford Town.
Nailsea & Tickenham FC (Swags) are set to play Chippenham Town (The Bluebirds) at home in The Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round on Saturday, September 14, 3pm kick off at home at Fryth Way.
In August 2023 Nailsea & Tickenham got as far as the FA Cup Preliminary Round second draw when they lost to Highworth Town 0-3 at home.
But this is a much-improved local club which has just strengthened its squad by signing young defender Sid Partridge, pictured below, from Manor Farm. More sport HERE.
Good luck Nailsea & Tickenham FC
GOOD TRY: On Saturday, September 7, Nailsea & Backwell 1st Xv was away to Bridgwater Albion RFC. It was a great if rusty start and Bridgwater kept us in our own half pretty well, but we took our chances every time they were presented which kept the scoreboard ticking. Second half our match generals took over and man of the match Alex Jones controlled where the game was played, and we came away with a good bonus point win. The final score was Bridgwater 23 – 31 Nailsea & Backwell/ We’ve got a lot of work on for next week but a nice start to the season against a well drilled Bridgwater side, writes club chairman Mark Raby who took the photos. You can read the club newsletter HERE
BLAZE OF GLORY: Nailsea & Tickenham FC won 4-2 against St Blazey AFC at Fryth Way at the weekend. The Swags continue the great early season form in this hard fought home win. Man of the man was Lucas Vowles who netted a hattrick. The four minutes in early goal came from Charlie Saunders
AWAY WIN: Nailsea People usually publishes first teams only but couldn't ignore our neighbours son Dylan Williams who was man of the match with three goals. Toby Kenny (2) and Remi Dobrowlski added to the final score, well done boys
Nailsea & Tickenham will be playing in the Emirates FA Cup’s Second Round Qualifying for the first time this weekend, and the competition’s famous silverware has been to visit the club ahead of their historic tie.
The team was formed in 2015 when Nailsea Town and Tickenham United decided to join forces, and they now participate in the Western League Premier Division.
The Swags were accepted into the Emirates FA Cup for the first time last season, and reaching the Second Round Qualifying is a significant achievement for the club.
Chippenham Town, who play several leagues above in the National League South, will make the relatively short trip to Nailsea for the game at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
Club personnel, Nailsea Juniors members, fans and people from the local community were at Fryth Way ahead of the tie, and got the chance to have their photos with the iconic trophy.
Nailsea & Tickenham FC chairman Bob Gregory said: “FA Cup fever has arrived in little old Nailsea, and I can’t say how proud I am personally in my 36th year at Fryth Way, but more so for what we have achieved since the merger between Nailsea Town and Tickenham United just barely nine years ago.
Here we go, here we go
“The actual FA Cup coming to Fryth Way is just a massive bonus, and will promote our club even further as well as the financial reward that we have taken from the journey. If we can progress into the next round, what a dream that would be!”
Gates open at 1pm and there will be a limited number of programmes on sale.
Home and away fans are urged to be considerate when parking.
The winners of this fixture will go into the Third Round Qualifying draw, which will be announced on Monday, September 16, and ties will be played over the weekend of Saturday, September 28.

GREAT GAME: A large enthusiastic crowd of nearly 500 football fans which included Nailsea Town Council chairman James Tonkin and Cadbury House theclub director and former profession footballer Jason Eaton who now coaches the u18s Swags team. Sadly the home team were not to be the giant killers on Saturday, September 14. The Chippenham side showed their superiority because when they had possession they didn't part with the ball and the final score sadly reflected this at 1-6.
