Coronation bank holiday

CORONATION STREET: The sun didn't have his hat on and the Nailsea People photographer could have done with an huge umbrella on Monday morning, April 24, but the High Street bollards did wear crowns and other assorted decorative headwear thanks to enthusiastic army led by Nailsea Town Council community wellbeing officer Jessica Brown. The village people set to work creating a festive streetscape in readiness for the coronation on Saturday, May 6. Councillor Liz Frappell and Tina Davey were among those 'lending a hand' as literally hundreds of knitters had spent weeks making the colourful celebration baubles. The tree on the village green sprouted some hadmade pom-poms and red, white and blue bunting was hanging from on high between the shops. Sorry some of the photos are blurred because rain got on the camera lens. And the total vison was only slightly spoilt by the scaffolding and car park roadworks. Events for the coronation bank holiday weekend are on our What's On page HERE. Additional images supplied by Tina, Sally Jess, Pam and Nailsea Dentalcare, thank you

CORONATION FAIR: Slightly overcast coronation day but thanks to Nailsea Town Council well-being officer Jess and her crew the High Street and Somerset Square was filled with cheer.  Brilliant stage for singers and dancers, colourful stalls, street entertainers and much, much more. Additional images supplied by Jess Brown, Steve Wright and Wendy Derrick, thank you

STREET CRED: Let's go street (and garden) party for the royal weekend. Here we have Hillcrest Road, Walnut Close, Earlesfield and Nailsea Social Club where people in the garden were entertained by the real king, an Elvis impersonator!

A coronation community fair is being planning for Saturday afternoon, May 6, in Nailsea town centre.

Organisers of a coronation fair want to hear from community groups that want to get involved.

Nailsea Town Council has unveiled exciting plans to stage the community fair to mark the coronation of King Charles.

Working in partnership with Praxis Retail, owners of the Crown Glass Place shopping centre, people are invited to join in as they put up the flags and celebrate the momentous occasion.

Local groups and organisations are invited to set up stalls in the High Street and Somerset Square and possibly even Colliers Walk, depending on the interest received.

Nailsea community wellbeing officer Jess Brown said; “We are planning plenty of family fun including face painting, welly wanging, tombolas, lucky dips and hook-a-duck as well as stalls and charity stands.”

Nailsea Town Council is also looking in to the possibility of providing coronation keepsakes for children living in the town.

Jess added: “This will be an opportunity for local businesses too, with all the local eateries joining in and retailers setting up promotions outside their shops.

"We expect to have live music and street entertainment and will be inviting the police and fire service to display their vehicles and engage with the public.

Party in Nailsea streets and parks

An extra bank holiday has been announced in May - see above - as part of the country's celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles III.
The King will be crowned during a service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, and over the weekend there will be more opportunities for people to come together and celebrate.
The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together, will take place across the country on Sunday, May 7.
Then on Monday, May 8, the day of the extra bank holiday, people are encouraged to take part in The Big Help Out, by volunteering for themselves and joining the work being undertaken to support their  areas.
North Somerset Council is encouraging communities to put their arrangements in place early if they're thinking about organising a get-together to celebrate the Coronation.
North Somerset Council leader Steve Bridger is the Independent ward councillor for Yatton, Claverham, Kingston Seymour and Kenn.
He said: "We hope that people will use the Coronation as an opportunity to come together and enjoy the celebrations, and street parties are a great way to do this."
More information about organising street parties and how to apply for a road closure is available on the council's website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/kingscoronationstreetparty.
In areas where street parties might be impractical, communities may want to consider arranging a ‘picnic in the park’ instead.
North Somerset Council will be able to allow a small number of these events in appropriate local parks and open spaces.

DING DONG: Bell -ringers from four local churches have answered the call to Ring For The King. At 9.30am on Saturday, May 6, bells will be ringing from Holy Trinity, Nailsea; Church of St Quiricus & St Julietta, Tickenham; and All Saints, Wraxall for the coronation for King Charles and Queen Camilla. People in Nailsea and adjoining villagers should be able to hear all three peals.

A national call was been made to recruit thousands of new bell-ringers to ring in the new king in May and to keep the ancient art from dying out in the long term. Church bells rang out across England last June to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II back in June 2022 and many of these were rung again, fully muffled, on her death in September last year. The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers has established a recruitment drive to ensure that there are enough ringers to go around. On bank holiday Monday, May 8, to celebrate the coronation the church tower at St Andrew’s at Backwell will open to visitors to climb to the top to see the view, see the bells and watch a bellringing demonstration. There are three tours at 1pm, 1.45pm and 2.30pm. This follows a busy weekend with ringing on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the start of the King’s reign.

TAKE THAT: The headteacher of Nailsea School back in 2013 Chris Wade sang with Gary Barlow and Take That in the royal coronation concert. Mr Wade is part of the Portishead RNLI lifeboat choir. He served in the Royal Navy as a marine engineer artificer for eight years before attending the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and graduating with a degree in sport and physical education and a PGCE in physical education in 2001. Mr Wade worked at Nailsea School until 2038. Named after the RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, the vocal group consists of Chris, Jake Bacon, Jem Smale, Lu Shephard, Nick Williams and Paul Weston. Paul said: “I’ve loved performing as part of The 85ers and I’m so delighted to be part of such a huge group of fellow singers and performers. To think that a little group of singers from Somerset could be part of such a momentous event is mind blowing, we can hardly believe it.”

PICK OF BUNCH: The Big Help Out was aimed at giving something back with hundreds of events nationwide. Beach cleans and litter-picks went ahead across the country and here in Nailsea the residents of Walnut Close did a grand clean-up at Backwell lake. On a very wet afternoon 10th Nailsea Brownies cleaned up in the library car park and near Iceland supermarket. And a family in Dunster Gardens did a clean sweep. After a weekend of celebration and over-indulgence for many, Monday was intended as a community thank you following all the fun things for King Charles’ Coronation. Well done everyone
