Nailsea skatepark festival

SUMMER BUZZ: Top photos are from the talented Cynthia Miller of her beautiful West End garden near Nailsea and the slideshow below is from when she went wild at Backwell lake. All taken in July 2024 with a lovely flora and fauna theme, thanks for sharing
God was good and the sun came out for the 21st Nailsea Community Skate Park Festival at Millennium Park on Saturday afternoon, July 13.
However it does look as though under the current organising team this will be their last year although echoes around the park by people of all ages was the show must go on.
The inaugural event was way back in 2003 but like the bike fest and Pink Ladies those in charge of organising have temporarily run out of steam.
And for the skatepark festival team it’s time to move over for perhaps a younger crew to take it on.
If there is anybody that would like to be involved or at least look at the potential of being involved in future years, please contact founder Phil Williams by email on phil@christiansurfers.co.uk
This July event may be a fitting finale to end this long-running community occasion.
The skatepark competitions consisted of rollerblade, BMX, skateboarding and scootering.
DJ Sam played some great tunes on vinyl, and commentary came from the Scottish tones of Neil Wylie.
His first-ever skate competition was in Nailsea, where he came last in his first competition.
He went away, practiced hard, and came back the next year and won.
some great performances from all with in the older skateboard category with Anis Tebib winning over Jasper Houghton (who sadly suffered an injury) and Archie Davis.
A huge thanks this year go to the competitors and their support crew. Phil thanked all of the volunteers that gave their time freely, as well as everybody in the community that had come and supported these events.
He added a special note of thanks, to Nailsea Town Council and Nailsea Community Trust, and in particular Holy Trinity and Trendlewood churches who have contributed so much over 21 years.

Beer & Cider festival 2024
Friday to Sunday, July 19-21
With the BBC weather peeps predicting an apocalyptic conditions at the weekend with rain, thunder and lightning Nailsea & Backwell beer & cider festival three day event was lucky to experience just a few showers with lots of sunshine in between.
We have known worse years weatherwise but beer and cider drinkers are made of sterner stuff.
The fest ran from Friday to Sunday, July 19-21 with a marquee full of fine ales many sponsored by local businesses including developers Taylor Wimpey who are building the Netherton Grange homes whose name is on the commemorative glasses. .
A N&B spokesperson said beforehand: "Well we said rain or shine and it looks like today we may be dealing with the rain!
"A bit of rain never stopped the party though…
"We have live music, some amazing food vendors and stalls, plenty of space in the marquee, ponchos and bucket hats available to purchase and of course you can always pop down with an umbrella and a rain coat!
"Luckily cider doesn’t taste any different in the rain and we have plenty of options available!
"See you there!"
On the Sunday afternoon top Nailsea band Corvus were booked to rock a change from the usual mellow mood at end of fest.
Ardent fest fan Will Hellier said: "Cracking weekend yet again at Nailsea & Backwell Beer & Cider Festival 2024.
"Volunteering with a top team on Friday and Saturday - always a great opportunity to catch up with so many cider fuelled friends, old and new.
"Sunday saw the debut of Whurzel Scrummage which was an absolute pleasure to perform and help out the festival organisers - thank you for the opportunity.
"Shout outs to Nailsea Physio for the re-set on Friday night, and to Jo Jo's facepainting for another beaut design."
Nana's Caribbean Food was so popular is had to restock early on with its great menu of jerk chicken wraps, curried goat, vegan plantain and chickpea curry and more.
Children’s Hospice South West successfully manned the children’s village over the weekend and Nailsea School PTA staffed the Pimms and Prosecco bars.
And the conclusion was: "Well that’s a wrap and what a fantastic time we’ve had.
"Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Nailsea and Backwell Beer and Cider Festival.
"We hope you’ve had as much fun as we’ve had and we’ll see you again next year!"
Nailsea & District Horticultural Society summer show 2024 attracted a bumper crop of produce and visitors to Nailsea School.
On display in the The Atrium were 274 classes for vegetables, flowers, fruit, pot plants, floral art, cookery, craft and photography.
Can you believe the annual summer flower show has been a fixture on the village calendar since 1853.
And it is the traditional that melds village to town.
Special classes for children included artwork and junior construction projects as well as cake and cookie baking.
Joint show secretaries Martyn Davis and Jane Knight agree there was something for everyone from the seasoned horticulturalist to the novice gardener as well as sections for those with more traditional arts & crafts skills.
From broad beans to begonias, from gooseberries to gladioli, and all accompanied by the sounds of the Filton Brass Band it was a lovely family afternoon with teas and refreshments served in the school dinner hall.
Like carnival it has its historic roots in the community and on Saturday, August 3, it all came together - well done everyone.
Martyn thanked everyone who had entered and/or visited the show.
He said: "It was a very enjoyable show which gave an excellent display to be enjoyed by the 400 plus visitors who came to see it.
"Nailsea School was filled with lots of colour with high quality exhibits in all sections of the show.
"It’s been a difficult year for growers with sharp changes in patterns of weather during the season but our exhibitors coped with all this and brought really good entries to the show.

"Top gardener Haydn Grove was awarded best exhibit in the horticultural classes for a trug of high quality vegetables.
"Some of the Filton Concert Brass Band musicians were held up in traffic on the M5 but all came together and played at their usual high standard.
"They said how much they enjoy coming to play for us because of the friendly, traditional flower show atmosphere which the show creates in Nailsea School."
