Macmillan coffee and cake

Friday, September 20

An invitation to

Macmillan-Coffee-Morning.jpg

Sara Card's mega Macmillan coffee morning is now in its eighth year.

For 2022 the all day coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Care was on Friday, September 30.

In the past seven years Sara has been hosting the event at her home at 7 Earlesfied she has raised more than £13K for the cancer charity.

Sara who is a keen baker and loves hosting dinner parties with a little help from her friends served coffee and cake from 10am-6pm at 7 Earlsfield.

In 2021 Sara served a large choice of cakes to eat under a large marquee on her drive together with cups of tea and coffee or for the adventurous glasses of Prosecco.

And in 2022 her back garden was filled with gazebos and her house with eager supporters.

People were invited to just turn up make a donation and use a takeaway service.

Our slideshow includes some of the cakes on offer for this year including gin & tonic, coffee, carrot, lemon drizzle and Prosecco flavour with specialty catering for those on celiac, vegan and low sugar diets.

Sara said: “I lost my father 13 years ago to cancer so he was my original inspiration.

"Since then, each year it seems more and more people around me get diagnosed with cancer.

“In 2020 with Covid I nearly gave up, however a very close friend of 30 years was diagnosed with terminal cancer five years ago, she is still here , fighting every day.

"So it’s my eighth coffee morning this year and I really have deliberated whether or not to go ahead with it as I have two big birthdays in my house this month.

"I then think how can I not, my close friend is five years in on her fight with terminal cancer and another friend has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, Macmillan makes a difference to them and so many others."

At the end of the weekend after a whirlwind of tidying up and distributing raffle prizes the total raised was in excess of £2,900 with more donations to come.

Nailsea International Bike Show

Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11

PILLION PERSON: Retired Mike West spent hours at the bike show capturing on camera the bikes, people and comings and goings. He was on a Backwell Camera Club outside community shoot. Thank you for sharing Mike

BIKE BOY: Student Benjamin 'Beans' Roberts, aged 16, is taking a creative digital media college course with Boomsatsuma, the Bristol based innovators and change makers in the city's creative industries. Thank you for sharing Ben

BIKES, BEER AND BANDS: The 12th Nailsea International Bike Show at the Ring O'Bells pub, St Mary's Grove, Nailsea, featured a wide selection of motorcycles, classics, custom, sports, tourer, cafe racers, trade stands and more! Bikes lined the drive and car park of Grove Sports & Social Club opposite the pub. Nailsea Bikers were deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and said in a statement: "After much thought we have taken the decision to go ahead with the show this weekend. We will celebrate her life and achievements on each day." Both days there were toasts to Her Majesty. As English actress, television personality, writer and broadcaster Denise Welch tweeted: “Instead of cancelling events that take years of blood, sweat and tears to organise, we should be celebrating the Queens amazing life and legacy." This was a great weekend for all the family with free entry and raising money for Children’s Hospice South West. Popular local band Corvus played on Saturday evening with Caught On The Back Foot headlining the  entertainment accompanied by a massive range of music of all genres, from Iron Maiden to Stevie Wonder with a bit of Oasis for good measure. Nailsea Bikers chairman John and son Peter took part in a sponsored haircut on the Sunday and on boht days the 2022 auction offered loads lots from fabulous jewellery to fantastic days out all for CHSW. We wait for final total of money raised for children's hospice...

SWAN SONG: ‘Clear the runway I’m coming in’ After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's swans have a new owner. Following a tradition that dates back to medieval times, swans in the UK belong to the monarch. Now, they belong to King Charles III. Tracey Thomas captured this fabulous image on Friday morning, September 16, at Backwell lake, thank you very much Tracey for sharing

August farmers' market

Saturday, August 20

HIGH STREET: It was bustling with more than 40 fruit, vegetable, arts and craft stalls with Nailsea Shedders and local councillors ready to talk to those buying wares. The invited highways officer from North Somerset Council failed to show at 65 High Street - bit like sensible solutions to our traffic concerns. Nailsea MicroPub customers took advantage of the sunny weather and sat outside the High Street taproom sampling beer, wines, cider and soft drinks while watching the world go by...

INTERNATIONAL BALLOONIST: Comes down to earth in Nailsea. Mike Petteford has been flying for more than three decades being taught to fly by his father who was also a hot air balloon pilot. It was his father who took Nailsea People editor Carol Deacon up in 1987, she lived to tell the tale. This flight ended in a crash landing in a bumpy field near Clevedon after hasty attempts to miss the cows and electricity lines. Mike has flown thousands of times all over the UK as well as in Dubai, the Maasai Mara in Kenya, over the Temples of Bagan in Myanmar, the deserts of Central Australia around Alice Springs and Far North Queensland by the Great Barrier Reef. Mike holds a commercial hot air balloon license in four separate countries. He also piloted a balloon in the world record breaking crossing of the English Channel back in 2011. These are Mike's photos from Bristol Balloon Fiesta Saturday morning launch which went over his home town of Nailsea. Can you spot your house or business?

Nailsea summer flower show

Saturday, August 6

After cancelling the 2020 and 2021 Nailsea & District Horticultural Society summer show on Saturday, August 6, at Nailsea School was a fantastic event with a real village feel.

As well as flowers and vegetables there were the traditional pots of jam and homemade cakes with crafts and photographs galore.

The first prize for the fluffy rabbit made out of recycled carpet slips was a triumph.

Overall like other horticultural shows in the area entries were 30 per cent down as the gardeners, floral artists and artisans attempt to reestablish themselves after the lockdown years.

Joint show secretary Martyn Davis believed the weather had something to do with it but he says that every year come hail or high water.

The schedule of 274 classes plus trophies, awards and medals included a 'lump in the throat moment' when Jeff Withers collected the Phillip Williams Memorial Cup from Nailsea Town Council chairman Mike Bird.

Jeff said: "I am so pleased to be the first person to have won this cup."

We took a moment to remember much-loved Phil a former president of the society.

Martyn and fellow joint show secretary Jane Knight held everything together and were really happy that visitors numbers were well up on previous years as people were so pleased to see the show back.

Martyn said: "I’m not sure how obvious it might have been, but we had a bit of a disaster on Saturday afternoon when the computer printer stopped working.

"We had to finish some of the prize cards and all of the trophy results using pen and paper!

"We more or less got away with it except that we missed giving the trophy for the best pot plant entry to Tony Willoughby due to confusion over one digit in his entry number."

And no-one won the Bob Vance Trophy for their peas and beans or the Sylvia Pullin Trophy for novice’s floral art class 104 although we aren't sure why, we didn't ask Martyn as he would have blamed the weather.

Diary dates for 2023 are Saturday, April 1 spring show and Saturday, August 5.summer show.

Balloons over Nailsea

Wednesday, July 27

On Wednesday, July 27, hot air balloons were spotted in the skies above Nailsea.

Mike Petteford took the amazing aerial shots which feature in a slideshow and video in our Gallery 2022 with other images from Nailsea people here.

We were surprised how circular Millennium Park next to the Scotch Horn Centre looks from the sky.

Mike who is busy editing a video of his flight which he promises to share later said: "Yes, it’s very neat from the air."

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is from Thursday to Sunday, August 11-14 at Ashton Court and features twice daily mass ascents featuring hundreds of balloons taking off from a ballooning arena at the centre of the event site. More details on our What's On page HERE.

Ballooning is very weather and wind dependent so the decision to fly is left to the last minute when the flying committee announce with a smoke cannon whether it is safe for pilots to take to the skies.

Nailsea People nominated our town for a community balloon launch, fingers-crossed we are successful..

More details about which amazing performances the crowds will be able to enjoy at the 2022 Fiesta will be released on its website here https://www.bristolballoonfiesta.co.uk/.

Music on the video is Owl City by the Saltwater Room.

Nailsea 2022 skatefest

Saturday, July 16
(postponed from original date due to bad weather)

The 20th Nailsea Community skatepark festival on a sunny summer Saturday,  July 16, was definitely worth the wait.

Thanks go to event director Phil Williams for these words and some of the photos and Paul O'Connor who acted as the main event photographer.

Phil said: "In its 20th year the Nailsea community skatepark festival took place in blazing sunshine on Saturday at the Millennium Park, but despite the heat everybody on the skate park managed to put in an incredible performance throughout the day.

"Organisers were really pleased to have such a great entry of local competitors, as well as travelling competitors in a range of categories in the scooter, skateboard and rollerblade disciplines.

"Due to Covid, we had not been able to run the event for the past two years, so it was great to be back in person at the ‘new’ park still looking in great shape since it was built five years ago.

"The event had to be postponed again from late June due to predicted rain, but there were no such concerns for this one.

"The volunteers and those who put the event together made extra plans to draft in gazebos and ensure everybody had a place to chill, and it was nice to see the trees providing great additional shade.

"The festival didn’t just provide action on the skate park, but there was plenty to do in the Millennium Park itself with refreshments from crepes to barbecue and some stalls highlighting amongst other things Wellspring Counselling, Clevedon Skatepark Project, Nailsea Community Trust, Nailsea Pump Track Project and a display of pictures from the past 20 years of the skate fest.

"There was table tennis and pool tables and youth chillout area, as well as a children’s area with lots of activities.

"Due to the heat the dance troupe TLF requested to come on a little bit earlier and did fantastically well through a medley of dances.

"With regards the skate park some great tunes from the DJ meant that both heats of all the categories were energetically ran with many of the competitors wowing the crowds with some crazy manoeuvres.

"In the girl’s category, there was one brilliant young lady called Lexie who took away the prizes, and two young men Theo and Jacob aged just six years old who took away the awards for the youngest competitors.

"In the two scooter categories the u12s really scooted well with a very close decision Bristol’s Henry Cole just taking the win ahead of Mani Palmer and Nailsea’s Jacob Lamb.

"A really strong showing in the older category saw Bristol’s Harvey Bevan, taking the victory ahead of Adan Powis and local scooter rider Jake Vickers.

"It was great to see a lot of skateboarders this year and in the skate u11s Will from Backwell beat Max and Oli to the title, while in the 12-15 category, Clevedon’s Archie beat Nailsea’s Somerset Hanson to win the title.

"The over 16 skate category was very hotly contested and in a close heat Nailsea Rob Waghorn just beating fellow locals Dennis Luffman and Anis Tebib to the 2022 title.

"For the first time in a number of years there was a good contingent of rollerbladers with Swindon’s Danny Brain beating Max Bladins and Nailsea’s Larry Oates.

"This event was a celebration of Toby Riley life who passed away just over a year ago, and it was fantastic to have his mum and dad, Suzy and Al, present to hand over the trophies.

"Organisers also handed the family a commemorative trophy in memory of Toby, and all that the park meant to him.

"Just before the presentation Christ Church priest-in-charge Jules Harris explained about her role, listening and be prepared to talk to people about anything that they might want to bring up, and also if requested to pray with people as well as assisting with practical support."

Sponsors from the start included Holy Trinity Church, Christian Surfers and

skate fest update.jpg

Skaters UK, Trendlewood church, Nailsea Community Trust, Nailsea Town Council, Christians Together in Nailsea, Crucial BMX, Shiner Skateboards,North Somerset Council for the use of the park and the cooperation of Scotch Horn Centre. And new for 2022 were Hewes Recruitment, The Old Farmhouse, Barratt Homes, Bakers the butchers, Wraxall and Tickenham churches, Tesco, Skate Or Die skate shop, Nailsea Baptist Church and graphic artist Jules Richardson for help on the design of the poster and the programme.

Phil added: "It is amazing to be back together again, a great vibe around the park, and one of my driving forces behind organising this event is seeing the youngsters coming through, from beginners to experienced and talented park users.

"I also believe that as a person of faith God loves skate park users as much as anybody else in the world, and having a faith is key at these challenging times for so many people."

Every competitor was given a commemorative enamel mug, a nice reminder of the day.

All being well the event will be back again in 2023 and if there are people out there that would like to get involved in helping to run this event, please email Phil at Nailseaskatefest@gmail.com.
