What do you get if you combine clever puppetry, catchy tunes, a very relatable storyline, and disco lights? The answer is Bluey’s Big Play.
The show, which is 50 minutes long so ideal for those younger audience members whose attention span is on the shorter side, has been taking the world by storm, and has proved immensely popular.
Bluey is well and truly a household name and appeals to both adults and children alike.
In fact, many of my friends have confessed to watching the show even when their children are not around!
The Australian animated show is centered around the Heeler family, and follows the antics of Bluey, her younger sister Bingo, and parents Chilli and Bandit.
Each episode is heartwarming and loveable and portrays a valuable lesson about family life.
My two girls, Paige age 5 and Chloe, 3, love the show, in particular the fact that it is about two sisters, just like them.
So, they were excited to see the characters brought to life on the stage. And I must admit – I was too!
For those wondering how the live show measures up – it is just as charming as the television series, and in true Bluey style the storyline is totally relatable.
Bandit wants a bit of downtime, and to be left to browse on his phone.
However Bluey and Bingo are having none of it and hide his phone to get him to play with them.
What follows is a fast-paced, hilarious game of hide and seek that had everyone laughing out loud.
A secondary storyline about being a good sister is also present alongside the main action.
The puppets were very expressive, with moveable eyes, eyebrows and tails.
Most importantly they’re voiced by the same actors as the cartoon, which makes them familiar.
Each puppet had two cast members to operate it, and they were so good that they almost seemed to blend into the background, making you see the puppet as a standalone figure.
The show was highly entertaining from start to finish, a whirlwind of noise, colour and fun.
From the moment it started, with the catchy theme tune playing out, to the moment it ended with an interactive game of keepy uppy, it had the whole audience transfixed.
But don’t just take my word for it, this is what Paige and Chloe had to say:
Paige: “It was so funny! The dad made me laugh and laugh because he is so silly. I liked it when Bluey and Bingo were chasing him in the car.”
Chloe: “Can we go and see it again?!”
The sellout show ends on Sunday, August 18, when it has three performances at 10am, 1pm and 14.30pm. Very limited tickets from £17.33 plus £3.80 transaction fee from here https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/blueys-big-play/bristol-hippodrome/tickets/1302F44D-7CB5-409A-83F3-809E196A7DC8
