AND AGAIN: From our archives dated September 2021 - now three years later and they are back circling Nailsea...

It was three years ago we published the above planning warning and now two developers have asked North Somerset Council about more building in Nailsea.

Crest Nicholson together with Strategic Land, a consortium of Nailsea landowners, has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) screening request on land at Poplar Farm so it can build 180 dwellings on 7.8 hectares of  agricultural field, currently accessed through Leighwood Drive.

And Nailsea Holdings LVA LLP want to build 381 homes on Land Yeo Valley. Outline permission with an environmental statement has been submitted along with 74 documents.

It has already attracted five pages of objections.

As well as homes they want to construct care home, business park, community building and car park while improving the existing playing pitches and public open space.

The plan includes two primary access points onto the B3130 one of which would bypass the High Street.

North Somerset Council must find sites for 23,805 new homes in the next 15 years.
Following the launch of consultation on the government’s proposed planning reforms, the council is reviewing its draft Local Plan and going back to the drawing board.

Government’s planning reforms have major implications for any Local Plan and the council is having to accommodate nearly 9,000 dwellings more than the initial target.

Obviously not all in Nailsea!

North Somerset planners will have to talk to neighbouring councils and consider vast swathes of land in flood plains.

Nailsea Junior FC Club chairman Ben Watts said: “As the main user of Greenfield Crescent Playing Fields since 1974, we were advised nearly 18 months ago about a potential of a planning application on the land north of the site and as you will be aware this week  North Somerset Council has validated a planning application for the proposal which means now it has been submitted over the next few months.

“North Somerset Council will decide if they will accept the plan or not. It is worth noting that the proposal is on land in Wraxall not in Nailsea.

LAST DAY sATURDAY SEPT 14.PNG

A North Somerset florist has been doing random acts of kindness by leaving small bunches of flowers in and around Nailsea for people to find.

Jacklyn Turner, aged 54, uprooted from her full-time teaching job to become a florist and launch her Sweet Pea business while caring for her elderly mother.

She said: “I was teacher for some 28 years, latterly at Redmaids’ High School in Bristol where I taught French and German and was the assistant head with responsibility for student welfare and safeguarding.

“I took early retirement in 2022 so I could spend more time looking after my mum who although she has Alzheimer’s really enjoys going to the Memory Club at the Tithe Barn and singing with its choir The Barn Owls.

“I trained at Bristol Flower School in 2023 and set up Sweet Pea Floral working from my home at Midgell Farm, Chelvey.

“As Sweet Pea Floral is a very new enterprise, I’m trying to get my name out by using local FaceBook groups and by leaving the ‘lonely bouquets’ around town.

“It’s lovely when people message me once they have been found and I’ve had a really positive response from them.

“Most of my business is doing gift bouquets.

“I make bespoke arrangements and do free delivery around Nailsea.

“I have also freelanced for other florists in Clevedon and Clifton Village.

“I enjoy doing that as it’s great to meet other people in the same business.

“My flowers usually come from the flower market in Bristol, but during the growing season, I like to use blooms from local flower farms in Backwell and Wick St Lawrence.

“My favourite flowers are of course sweet peas but also ranunculus.

“I’m already planning for Christmas and will be making door wreaths and table centres, as well as leaving a few more lonely bouquets around town during that busy and stressful period.

“A tiny bunch of flowers is such a happy uplift!”

So where to look for the gift

So where to find the flowers left by Jacklyn – we asked for a clue.

She said: “Anywhere on a bench, Millennium Park, the town centre, outside Waitrose, by the children’s play area in Somerset Square.!

To order customers can contact Jacklyn via direct message on her Facebook or instagram pages, email hello@sweetpeafloral.co.uk or call 0779 391 4300.

She generally needs 48 hours’ notice so she can get to the flower market.

“Nailsea Junior Fc neither wants or will be getting involved in ANY planning debates for this proposal.

“The club understands that this is an emotive subject and there will be varied views on the proposal.”

The football pitches at Greenfield Crescent are ‘owned’ by Nailsea Playing Fields Association.

The application shows new facilities which will benefit Nailsea Junior FC and the wider community.

It would be a significant investment ranging from new changing rooms, drainage work on the playing fields and a MUGA (multi use games Astro).

Ben added: “This would undoubtedly improve the current facilities which currently are unsatisfactory.

“The club will not be making any further comment on the proposal and allow the relevant decision makers the time to follow the correct and proper process.”

Gleeson’s outline planning application for up to 400 houses on land south of Nailsea and west of Station Road Nailsea did get thrown out but building work progresses at the Taylor Wimpey development at Netherton Grange and the Barratt Homes site off Engine Lane is almost finished at Parish Brook.

Nailsea waterworks

It took nearly two hours for people to get to the front of the queue in a scene reminiscent of the Covid days when we waited patiently outside in a long single file to buy groceries from our supermarkets.

But this queue was people wanting bottled water as household supplies were cut off, we are told, due to a Stonewood contractor at The Uplands fracturing the mains pipeline.

Tuesday morning, September 3, began with a dog walker noticing his puppy gleefully jumping about in a big puddle which quickly turned into a fast-running stream on the west side of Nailsea.

This in turn became a torrent and hundreds of homes were suddenly without drinking water.

Pubs, clubs, shops and beauty salons were all affected and had to close.

Social media was awash with tales of woe and residents were urged to look out for neighbours in need.

A Bristol Water tanker arrived at Scotch Horn Leisure Centre in the early evening of Tuesday while others on the ‘elderly and vulnerable’ register got deliveries to their doorstep.

Bristol Water updates were posted online some a little understated.

One said: "Our teams are working hard to fix a burst water main which was caused by third-party damage.

"The burst has caused some customers in the area to run out of water.”

By Wednesday a full 24hrs later and the drama was beginning to subside except for those living at Netherton Grange whose homes and gardens were flooded.

We are told businesses can claim for lost business, people on water meters can claim a ‘flushing allowance’ at a guesstimate it will be all of 71p by logging on here:

https://www.bristolwater.co.uk/flushing-allowance-form  and those with a medical condition or disability are urged to register for Priority Services by calling 0345 702 3797.

At 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 3, Bristol Water had begun to turn the taps back on.

It said: "Our teams have now refilled the reservoir and have recovered the water systems, so we have started to get water back to customers.”

However, it came with a warning: “As your water starts to return you may notice it coming out looking a yellow or brown colour. If this happens, please run your cold tap, closest to the mains coming into your property, for up to 30 minutes and until the water runs clear. Please do not run further taps in your property as this could cause issues/damage.”

For more information about discoloured water go to:

https://www.bristolwater.co.uk/faq-individual-0

North Somerset areas affected include Nailsea, Clevedon, Wraxall, Claverham, Portishead, Clapton in Gordano, Weston in Gordano, Portbury, and Yatton.

Stonewood group services director Gavin Calthrop said: "I can confirm there was an incident at our Elm Grove site on Tuesday which did lead to widespread disruption to the water supply in the area.

"It is unclear at this stage what the exact cause of the incident was but, as you would expect, we are conducting an urgent investigation.

"The site team responded very quickly along with Bristol Water and neighbouring developers to contain the situation as effectively as possible and repair the pipe that was affected.

"Our priority now is to work closely with those people who we know have been directly affected."

  • It was bad enough that people in the Silver Street area have been without a BT  landline for weeks but when the water supply got cut off for thousands of homes in the Nailsea this was an even bigger disaster as they couldn’t call for help. Vivian Parsons said: “A lot of people in Nailsea have been without the use of their landline for the past four weeks, including me. It was only after pestering BT I found out that there is a major fault at the Nailsea exchange. The date for repairing this fault is being moved on week by week and it is now the beginning of September. I notice from social media a lot of people do not know why their phones are not working or where to find information about the reason (it wasn't easy, I can confirm). To my knowledge this problem affects people all over Nailsea and an explanation from BT would be welcome.” The latest date given to fix phones for 845 customers is 8am on Thursday, September 12. This information was given to customers 24hrs after we asked what was going on. Nailsea People has had 'no official reply' from BT to press inquiries, about the landlines or another outstanding ask about the red telephone box outside the Tithe Barn. The privatised company as Openreach is also a broadband provider.

Nailsea & Tickenham v Chippenham Town big cup draw.
It’s only Nailsea’s second season in the competition, and they’ve landed a plum draw against a side three divisions above them.

Having beaten Cinderford Town, Reading City and Hartpury University, they won’t roll over against a Chippenham side who lost 4-1 at this stage last year to lower league Hungerford Town.

Nailsea & Tickenham FC (Swags) are set to play Chippenham Town (The Bluebirds) at home in The Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round on Saturday, September 14, 3pm kick off at home at Fryth Way.

In August 2023 Nailsea & Tickenham got as far as the FA Cup Preliminary Round second draw when they lost to Highworth Town 0-3 at home.

But this is a much-improved local club which has just strengthened its squad by signing young defender Sid Partridge from Manor Farm. More sport HERE.
